Welcome to the World Language Class/Spanish and another exciting school year! I look forward to working with all my students and support them as they face the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. I hold high expectations for my students, both in academics and behavior. I work hard at establishing a classroom atmosphere of respect, cooperation, and responsibility, so I expect my students to come to class each day prepared, ready to learn and practice using the Spanish language. I believe that together, we can make this a very productive year.
Your child(ren) from grade PK to grade Five attend a FLES program (Foreign Language in Elementary School) with 45 minutes of instruction once a week.
Students engage in multiple learning activities all related to a second language acquisition while in my class; they also receive insight into Hispanic Culture and actively participate in cultural activities related to the target language, Spanish.
Please encourage your child(ren) to practice some Spanish at home by singing songs, completing homework, making flash cards with vocabulary words and pictures, reciting verses, playing games in Spanish, naming things using Spanish words, phrases, or sentences according to his/her age and grade, watching programs for children in Spanish Language channels, practicing speaking with someone who else speaks it, reading easy books in Spanish, and using web sites like quia.com, duolingo.com, babble.com, mundoprimaria.com Linguazone.com and others that offer foreign language practice for children. All the above are practical ways to help your child(ren) retain the information they have learned in their lessons.
Students from 1st to 5th grade will either have homework to complete, or a practice sheet to review at home weekly. Practice at home is especially important when learning another language; It is a way to apply what the child learns in the classroom and helps internalize concepts and the language itself.
MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR THE CLASS
*Pencil, eraser, some paper to take notes, and a folder to file the subject work. st to 5th grade students must bring these materials to all Spanish lessons.
We’ll have a school year full of engaging and learning experiences in our World Language class.
