The following is a letter from Stoddert’s SEM teacher on the project for second through fifth grades…
Greetings Stoddert Families,
I am writing to you regarding the Schoolwide Enrichment Model, SEM, projects that students have been diligently working on in school. Our students have been learning the process of planning and producing research projects with the help of Stoddert’s Schoolwide Enrichment Model, SEM, team which also includes Mrs. Bowlin and Ms. Thompson.
The plan was for students in grades 3-5 to have all projects completed by the end of the first quarter, which is the end of October. However, I do realize that this is a new learning model for students and we anticipate a necessary loss of SEM time due to mandatory assessments for Grades 3-5. Based on these factors, I believe that our students would certainly benefit from an extension on the deadline of their projects. The new due date for all SEM projects for students in grades 3-5 will be November 11, 2016.
Students will be able to use class time to complete most, if not all, parts of their projects. I do encourage students to work at home, when applicable. Generally, this is when students are working on the final phase of their project. For example, drawing or writing facts on posters, putting the finishing touches on a slideshow, building models, etc.
The following rubric will be used to grade the students:
