The following is a copy of the “welcome back to school” letter mailed to all students from the principal:
Dear Stoddert Families,
We hope you’re enjoying a wonderful, relaxing summer! The weeks since school was dismissed for summer break have flown by, and have been filled with preparations for the coming school year. Those preparations have included the hiring of several new staff members:
- Ibis Villegas, Assistant Principal
- Richard Golland, 5th Grade Teacher
- Julie Schneider, Science Teacher
- Hannah Schiff, Garden Coordinator
Also, Mr. Clinton Turner will be serving as our Mary Jane Patterson Fellowship Resident Principal for the first semester of SY15/16. The Mary Jane Patterson Fellowship is a DCPS program which prepares new school leaders, and the final stages of the fellowship include school-based residencies for the participants. You may remember that Mrs. Berry-Young served as our MJP Resident Principal during the second semester of SY14/15.
Other staff changes which occurred during the summer months include the departure of two outstanding educators: Mrs. Bruce and Ms. Gross. Mrs. Bruce will be serving as the Instructional Coach at Thomas Elementary, and Ms. Gross will be serving in a coaching role for a consortium of schools in the Philadelphia area. We wish both of them great success!
The departure of Mrs. Bruce and Ms. Gross has allowed for the return to Stoddert of two teachers whose positions had been excessed for SY15/16, and has also created a shift in teaching assignments. We’re happy to welcome back Mrs. Bowlin as our librarian, and Ms. Ford-Barnum as our PK4 teacher. Mrs. Taylor will be moving from kindergarten to 1st grade, and Miss Terrell will be moving from PK4 to kindergarten.
I have good news and bad news about our long-awaited playground renovation. The good news is that it is underway, and the bad news is that it’s unlikely to be completed by opening day. Much of the area in front of the school, as well as the entire playground area (including the “kindergarten porch”) is fenced off, which means that we will not be able to use those areas for morning entrance until the playground renovation is complete. Therefore, we will be using indoor morning lineup in the gym for the opening days of SY15/16. The temporary closure of the “kindergarten porch” area will also impact our dismissal procedures, and require that all students will be dismissed from the main lobby area.
Two important reminders about security: 1) no visitors, including parents/guardians, may go beyond the lobby area without first signing in at the security desk which is located near the cafeteria, and; 2) even though 4th-grade classrooms will be located in the West Wing, parents/guardians should never take their 4th-grade students directly to their West Wing classrooms. If 4th-grade students arrive tardy in the morning, they are to report to the main office, and they will be escorted by an office staff member of a security officer to their classroom. Likewise, parents/guardians of 4th-grade students should never go directly to their child’s West Wing classroom without first signing in at the security desk.
In spite of recent news articles about Chartwells’ desire to no longer serve as a DCPS school lunch provider, we will continue to use their services during SY15/16. As detailed on the district website (dcps.dc.gov), the 2015-16 elementary lunch price will be $2.10. Students can pay for meals in any of three ways:
- By prepaying with a credit or debit card at myschoolbucks.com
- By inserting cash into the MyPal Kiosk located in the Stoddert cafeteria
- My sending a check or money order made payable to the DC Treasurer to the following address:
DCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services
1200 First Street NW, 11th Floor
Washington, DC 20002

Our teachers will be back at work on Monday, August 17. If any of you are able to make a Visitor Parking Pass available to a Stoddert staff member, please bring the pass to the Stoddert office prior to August 17, and we’ll assign it to a specific teacher.
Finally, you are reminded of an opportunity to drop off school supplies and briefly meet your child’s teacher on Friday, August 21 from 2:30-3:00 p.m. This is not intended as a time for lengthy conversations with the teachers, or for formal classroom presentations. Following this brief classroom visit, an informational session will take place in the gym from 3:00-3:30 p.m.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
