DCPS Volunteer Opportunities

An introduction to upcoming events and new volunteer opportunities from DCPS’ new volunteer coordinator, Tinika Falls.

Volunteer Now!

Calling new Stoddert families! The PTA needs volunteers for many initiatives, small and large.

Stoddert Fall Events

Some of the best Stoddert traditions happen in October and November! We’re getting ready for the Halloween Parade and the Harvest Fun Fair (we need volunteers, too). Picture Day is coming up, and a PTA-sponsored Open House for prospective students and parents. Fall is here — get involved!

Updated: Stoddert’s 2010-2011 Room Parents

This a list of this year’s room parents. Note: We still need someone to help out Lori Milstein in Mr. Dingledine’s class. Room parents will soon be recruiting volunteers to assist with class Halloween celebrations, so please be on the look out for notes/email about that. Thanks to everyone who volunteered!

Fillmore Needs Volunteers: Support Arts Education

Fillmore needs to recruit at least two parent board members from Stoddert and each of the program’s other member schools, but we also need occasional volunteers to help with everything from stuffing envelopes to staffing student performances.

Labor Day Block Party and Cook-Off to Support Fillmore Arts

Please support Fillmore by bringing the family out Monday (Labor Day) to a block party/barbecue fundraiser sponsored by Cafe Saint-Ex. The festivities run from 11-5 at the corner of 14th and T, NW. There will be live music, lemonade stands, plenty of activities for kids and, of course, lots of great barbecue. This is the year’s big fundraiser for the Fillmore Arts Center, which provides award-winning arts programs for students at Stoddert and nine other public elementary schools across DC. Virtually all the supplies and equipment used for the program are paid for by donations and events like this. So please stop by — Café Saint-Ex throws a great party!

Room Parents Needed

Stoddert’s room parents play a crucial role in getting the class together and getting the word out. Help us make classroom events, school functions, and yearly special events a great success for all. The primary duty of a room parent is to work with the teacher and/or special event coordinator to recruit and coordinate parent participation. The time commitment usually amounts to only a few hours each month, and it’s fun! Contact Christine Gossens for more information and to volunteer.

From Your PTA Co-Presidents | August 28

Welcome back to the initial week of the 2010-2011 school year from your PTA Co-Presidents, Mary McLaughlin and Ben Jensen. Read about upcoming events in September, the proposed schedule for monthly PTA meetings, and our plans for the upcoming year. We need volunteers for these and other events — please respond in the comments if you can give us some time, and a PTA member will contact you.

Help prepare our youngest students for the first day of school!

DCPS is asking for your help the weekend of August 14 and 15. We will be going door-to-door to more than 5,000 households who have children in our early education program to give them information about the first week of school. We want each and every child to have a strong start to the school year, and we want their families to have the information they need to help their children succeed. Could you please give three hours of your time next weekend to help us help reach out to these these children and their families? We will be working out of schools in every ward, so you can go to a location that is convenient for you.

Live in Your World, Play in Ours

This is the last year that Anastasia Miller and Jennifer McLennan can volunteer their time to Stoddert PTA communications. We need new volunteers by the end of July to take over sending email announcements every week (every two-three weeks over the summer) and updating the website.
