Liz Myers, Stoddert PTA Liaison

For additional information and official minutes, please visit the Glover Park Citizens Association web site: www.gpcadc.org

Mayor Fenty attended the May 6 meeting and addressed numerous issues that had arisen in April. He gave a status on activities in Glover Park; below is a brief summary. The mayor can be contacted for urgent problems at his e-mail address: amf@dc.gov

Guy Mason Rec Center – Parks & Recreation has hired a person in charge of planning, and they expect to break ground on both the center and the field within the next six to eight weeks.

Georgetown Library restoration – Unfortunately this is moving very slowly; apparently the occasion is being used as an opportunity to evaluate new ideas for the library, which is slowing the process. The mayor will try to help expedite, and he added they should have a temporary site ready soon.

Stoddert Rec Center and Modernization – These projects are being combined, and Alan Liu will head them simultaneously. Work should begin by 2011, with demountables at the school site. The mayor’s office will work to have a transparent process and excellent results for the community.

Rats and Garbage – The mayor said treatment has not been fast enough in the neighborhood. They baited seven locations today and will be working more aggressively on the problem.

Streetscape Improvements – This project will kick off in the spring of 2009 and will include sidewalks, meters and more. It is expected to be a great enhancement for the business community.

Liquor Moratorium – The alcohol review board operates independently, but the mayor’s office will work with the community to help ensure Glover Park’s views are heard.

Education – At this time the office is focused on re-organizing and budgeting, with a .7% increase over last year. The mayor strongly supports the work the new Chancellor is doing to reform the school system, and emphasized the need to manage the budget responsibly and to improve education at all levels. He addressed a complaint about nonresponsiveness at UDC, saying that much improvement is needed there, as pre-Williams administration management is still entrenched.

Recycling – The mayor agreed we could do more here, with more venues and expanded efforts into other materials. He will research best practices, particularly the operation in San Francisco, and will put more emphasis on this in the future.

Cabs – There is a grace period during May where cabbies can become accustomed to the new meters. However, beginning June 1 the new fare system will take effect, with non-conforming cabbies fined. Mayor Fenty was not sure whether there was an addition $1 charge for gas or for additional passengers.

Boys & Girls Club – The mayor is committed to keeping this and will work closely with the community on it. A new CEO has just been elected.

The remainder of the meeting covered ongoing GPCA business:

Glover Park Day is June 7. If you’re interested in helping, the committee meets Saturday mornings at 10:00 in Whole Foods near the entrance.

Federation reports will now be uploaded monthly, so check the GPCA web site for news on what other DC civic organizations are doing.

The GPCA by-laws were amended for 2008, allowing the president to hold a third term. Elections were held, with the proposed slate of candidates to take office.

Triangle landscaping at 37th Street and Wisconsin Avenue was discussed again. DC’s Ward 3 DOT planner was present and explained the location will become a temporary bus stop during streetscape work. He will coordinate with other agencies to ensure landscaping does not conflict with this. DOT is also exploring overall improvements to that intersection.

Vacant properties have been addressed, with notices posted on the three empty locations on Wisconsin Avenue.

A Neighborhood Watch program is being explored; the application to register has been sent and work will continue to re-launch it this fall.

Town Hall’s request for roof deck service has caused much controversy. Several groups are protesting it, and the mediator has suggested that the restaurant propose a compromise solution, otherwise a hearing will take place in June. A voluntary agreement may be discussed over the summer, requiring an extra GPCA meeting then.

Rocklands is interested in a full liquor license. The owner attended and explained it would enhance the business – He has been in the neighborhood since 1990.
