Stoddert Elementary » Newsletter Archive http://www.stoddert.org A District of Columbia Public School Sat, 04 Feb 2012 16:01:27 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.3.1 General PTA meeting January 5, 2012 6:30p http://www.stoddert.org/2012/01/general-pta-meeting-january-5-2012-630p/ http://www.stoddert.org/2012/01/general-pta-meeting-january-5-2012-630p/#comments Fri, 06 Jan 2012 19:57:11 +0000 ginger http://www.stoddert.org/?p=4033 The first parent- teacher meeting of 2012 was held in the library at Stoddert on Jan 5 at 6:30p.  The President, Katy Youel-Page, opened the meeting and welcomed everyone back.  She encouraged everyone to continue working together toward community building events and enjoying the school year with our kids.  The Principal, Dr. Cuthbert, spoke next and wished everyone a Happy New Year.   She thanked the parents for the generous holiday gifts to school staff.  The paced interim assessments for grades 2-5 will be Monday and Tuesday.  Soon, she will begin looking forward at projected enrollments for next school year with the LSAT.  The out of boundary lottery will begin on January 30 and close on February 27.  Also coming soon are the forms being sent to the homes of students requesting a declaration of intent to return to the school for next year.  This helps with the planning for class sizes in the coming school year.  Equally important to the planning for next year is registration, which is still several months away.  The Student Council has shirts and sweats available for sale- adult sizes as well as kid sizes.   Look for her weekly letter in the Chalkboard for more news.

Jinny Choi gave the teacher update.  She began by thanking the PTA for the generous holiday gifts and to the parents for helping with class celebrations.  She and the teachers are currently working on creating a leveled book library with PTA funds.  It will be used by every classroom.   Eve-lyn Turmail presented the current treasurer update and passed out the most recent balance sheet.  She explained the most recent expenditures.

Family Fun Night will be held again this year thanks to Sarah Strike.  She’s still putting it together and hoping to hold it on February 25 at the school.  To volunteer for this fun event please contact her or president@stoddert.org

Katherine Latterner is the head of Fillmore Art Center and she spoke about the history of Fillmore, it’s offerings to our students and introduced the President of Friends of Fillmore, who spoke about getting information out to families by creating a website and mailing list: friendsoffillmore.org   Donations may also be made on the website for materials not covered by DCPS.   Anyone interested in visiting Fillmore to learn more about classes or your child’s class in particular is welcome to contact Ms Latterner to make arrangements at k.latterner@dc.gov

Lauren Biel from DC Greens attended the meeting and spoke about the school garden.  She introduced Kelly, the new garden coordinator who will be at Stoddert on Wednesdays working with teachers and students.    This week, she worked with the 5th graders on nutrition, the 3rd graders on alternative energy and the kindergarteners on recycling.

The Big Chili planning continues!  Caitlin Oppenheimer is heading up the big event this year and could use lots of helping hands.   Discussions are in the works with the Embassy of Finland to confirm dates and times.  More information will be forthcoming but PLEASE don’t hesitate to contact her to volunteer- projects large and small need many hands to move them forward.  Contact her at bigchili@stoddert.org or    cecopp@mac.com
