The garden that we built together has been a huge success this year. The crops are growing beautifully, the students enjoyed a wonderful harvest day organized by parents, and as Dr. Cuthbert said to us, the students and teachers are “jazzed” about it. Now that the summer months are here, it falls to us as a community to ensure that the garden is maintained (watered and weeded) and that the bounty of produce doesn’t go to waste!
Notes about the talent shows at Stoddert and Fillmore; reminders about Science Fair deadlines and judging opportunities; details about fifth-grade promotion ceremony, schedule, and activities; and our regular exhortation to REGISTER and show proof of residency.
This coming Tuesday Stoddert’s 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-graders will have a “salad party” in the Stoddert garden. The party will be an opportunity for the students to experience the garden in a hands-on way. Students will harvest and wash the spring greens and herbs they planted and helped grow, and then sample them with delicious dressings they’ll help make. We still need volunteers for the day and a few supplies. Details and contact information in the post.

Start your Saturday with a visit to Glover Park-Burleith farmer’s market at Hardy, every Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Highlights from this week’s market in the post. The market is brought to you by DC Greens, a local 501(c)(3) organization. Proceeds from the market support school gardens (they sponsored the teaching garden at Stoddert).
