The following is an open letter to all Stoddert families from outgoing PTO president, Jen Perry. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read…
Dear Stoddert Community,
Almost 12 years ago, I stepped into Stoddert with my oldest son, who will be in 11th grade this fall. I was pushing my two year old daughter in a stroller and I was pregnant my other son. My youngest would not be on the scene for another three years. The school back then was just a fraction of the building and student population that it is now, but still brimming with activity. It was overwhelming at first. I hardly knew anyone.
I knew I wanted to get involved, but I wasn’t sure how to help out. I could see that many parents were involved. I started helping out with open houses when we were in trailers. Then, I saw that the website could use an overhaul and the newsletter needed someone to send it out. I slowly got involved in city-wide advocacy as Fillmore was threatened and the new building began to run over capacity. Eventually, I ended up in the PTO president’s seat, preceded by a whole list of parents who stepped up when it was their turn.
I have really enjoyed being president for the past two years. We have accomplished a lot as a community. We have kept Fillmore alive with the help of other school partners, gotten an addition in the budget for Stoddert, improved communication, raised money for much needed supplies and programs, and kept many of our time-honored events going.
We could NOT have done this without the help of so many volunteers. Thank you to all who volunteered this year.
It is now time for me to bow out and allow a new set of parents to take the reigns of the PTO Executive Board. Lisa McCluskey will be serving the second term of her co-presidency, but she needs someone who will step up to be a co-president with her. We need your help to fill positions both on the board and in the many committees that are required to move our community forward. Here is a link to more information about open positions.
Our final General PTO Meeting is this coming, Tuesday, May 8th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. The PTO will provide childcare and pizza. At this meeting, we will elect some new officers into positions where people are stepping down. Some officers will continue their two year term.
We need you to be there.
Volunteerism is what makes Stoddert an amazing learning community for our kids. My story is just one of many stories of how parents got involved.
What impact will you have on the school? Where will you put your name next year?
Thank you for all of your support this year!
