Over the past few years Stoddert has received several grants through the Office of State Superintendents of Education (OSSE) that were critical in providing enhancements for the Stoddert student community. These grants were written by a Stoddert PTO parent volunteer, with the assistance of Coach Wagner and other Stoddert staff. In total Stoddert has received $65,000 in grants over five years.
Grants from the DC School Garden Grant (SY12-15) and the DC Physical Activity for Youth (DC PAY) grant (SY15-17) have been instrumental in helping our students maximize the garden classroom, instituting a science curriculum in the earliest grades, and buying new, replacement, and specialized Physical Education (P.E.) equipment and storage units. Specialized equipment helps to introduce to non-traditional P.E. activities, such as archery, hiking, setting up a tent and throwing a fly fishing rod, to kids living in an urban environment.
The DC PAY Grant has also allowed for the expansion of the popular BOKS morning program to operate the entire school year, the continuation of the 5th grade Dancing In Classrooms semester, transportation for popular Cornerstone projects including the 2nd grade biking and 3rd grade hiking field trips and finally support of Stoddert’s Cross Country/Track and Field teams that have grown to nearly 25 kids strong each semester.
This enhancements to Stoddert’s community are not typical at DC Public Schools and we thank all the parent volunteers and staff who help to make such wonderful events happen.
