As recent events have shown us, DCPS intends to eliminate our beloved Fillmore Arts Center after the upcoming 2016-17 school year. Initially, DCPS intended to put an immediate end to Fillmore, but thanks to hard work from the Friends of Fillmore, the DC City Council, and all of your efforts at public outreach and advocacy, we were able to win one more year.
We must do it again!! And this time, we need to make sure that funding for Fillmore is extended permanently. To do this, we need to make sure that Mayor Muriel Bowser, Chancellor Kaya Henderson, and the DC City Council understand that Fillmore is the only way our kids can receive a real arts and music education. Stoddert Elementary simply has no extra classroom space, or tools and supplies, for such basic offerings as painting, sculpture, or instruction with musical instruments.
A pre-paid postcard intended for your communication with Mayor Bowser or Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh will be going home in your child’s backpack and/or green folder this week. You will see space on the card for you (and/or your child) to describe your child’s love for Fillmore, positive experiences, or the necessity of Fillmore for Stoddert Elementary. Examples include:
- Fillmore offers exceptional courses such as computer animation, band, keyboards, guitar, dance, and theater
- Tell a story about your child’s favorite arts class or teacher.
- Fillmore is necessary because Stoddert is overcrowded and has no dedicated classroom space for arts education
Please help our effort to permanently fund Fillmore by filling out this card and mailing to either Mayor Bowser or Councilmember Cheh. In addition to this postcard, please help over the summer by sending additional email, letters and social media messages to the other members of the DC Council and DCPS Chancellor Henderson.
Thank you for your continue support of arts and music education for our children! For more information, please visit the Friends of Fillmore website at www.friendsoffillmore.org.
