The following is an article and video from Coach Wagner about the recent bike riding field trip for the second grade.
Stoddert’s second grade students recently completed their DCPS Cornerstone unit on biking by riding a three-mile loop through Rock Creek Park. Students used the various skills that they learned from physical education class to increase their bike safety. About half of the second grade students could not bike at the beginning of the biking unit. Every student was able to balance and pedal for at least a short distance by the end of the unit.
The overarching theme of the unit was bike safety. The student’s understanding of biking “rules of the road” and accurate helmet fitting were the more important concepts to learn over the actual skill of riding a bike.
The biking safety unit stretched over six lessons during physical education class with the sixth lesson being the bike ride event through Rock Creek. The first lesson taught proper helmet fitting and allowed students to check each other’s helmets using the two-finger technique, where only two fingers should fit between eyebrow and helmet and only two fingers should fit between the chin strap and chin. Over the next two lessons, the students practiced the biking “rules of the road,” such as what to do at stop and yield signs and various hand signals. The final two build-up lessons were focused on refining the student’s biking skills. The beginning riders were also provided Friday afternoon opportunities to get more bike riding practice.
The culminating bike riding event in Rock Creek Park was awesome! Thanks to the help of over 25 parent volunteers and the second grade staff, the students were able to complete three different field trips. The weather was great and the students enjoyed seeing the sights and sounds of nature; the ducks and fish swimming in the creek under the changing leaves of the park. The parent volunteers who rode with the students and those that walked with group really helped to improve the bike riding skills.
Overall, the bike riding unit at Stoddert was a great experience for all of the second grade and a great success. There were many smiles and the students’ confidence in themselves and their skills were vastly improved. I would like to continue this bike riding unit next year, and with the help of parents and our great staff at Stoddert, I am sure we will build off of our success.
