Please support Fillmore by bringing the family out Monday (Labor Day) to a block party/barbecue fundraiser sponsored by Cafe Saint-Ex. The festivities run from 11-5 at the corner of 14th and T, NW. There will be live music, lemonade stands, plenty of activities for kids and, of course, lots of great barbecue. This is the year’s big fundraiser for the Fillmore Arts Center, which provides award-winning arts programs for students at Stoddert and nine other public elementary schools across DC. Virtually all the supplies and equipment used for the program are paid for by donations and events like this. So please stop by — Café Saint-Ex throws a great party!
It was an amazing week at Stoddert ES. Congratulations on a great start! Read for highlights from the week, reminders about Fillmore, notes on upcoming events and school features, and more.
Stoddert’s room parents play a crucial role in getting the class together and getting the word out. Help us make classroom events, school functions, and yearly special events a great success for all. The primary duty of a room parent is to work with the teacher and/or special event coordinator to recruit and coordinate parent participation. The time commitment usually amounts to only a few hours each month, and it’s fun! Contact Christine Gossens for more information and to volunteer.
Welcome back to the initial week of the 2010-2011 school year from your PTA Co-Presidents, Mary McLaughlin and Ben Jensen. Read about upcoming events in September, the proposed schedule for monthly PTA meetings, and our plans for the upcoming year. We need volunteers for these and other events — please respond in the comments if you can give us some time, and a PTA member will contact you.
The August 26 Chancellor’s Notes, Chancellor Rhee’s newsletter about the state of D.C. public schools. Stoddert’s renovation and the ribbon-cutting ceremony are featured in this issue.
Come enjoy a casual, fun evening on the playground. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Please bring a side salad or dessert to share (and a serving utensil). Browse the books at the used book exchange—donate your own gently used books and find others to take home. Look for donation boxes in front of the school beginning next week.
I have just been notified by the U.S. Department of Education that District of Columbia schools have been awarded $75 million in federal Race To The Top funding to continue key aspects of the ongoing school reform. Race To The Top is part of President Obama’s $4 billion investment in education reform. DC was one of 19 finalists in the second round, and was one of 10 to have received the grant. The award is a result of a joint application submitted by DCPS, public charter schools, OSSE and the State Board of Education. This award will serve 91 percent of the District’s children–in both DC Public Schools and in charter schools.
