Stoddert Elementary

This Week, from Dr. Cuthbert | May 17, 2010

Hello Everyone,

It has been a busy time, but a very productive time for the Stoddert Wolves.  Kudos go to Ms. Prosser for organizing the upper grades’ Science Fair and to all the teachers and parents who supported the students as they developed their projects.  The quality of projects was terrific.  My favorite part is having the students explain the results.  I could not hear each and everyone, but was impressed with those I either heard or saw.  At this writing the lower grades’ scientific demonstrations have not happened, but stay tuned!

We sent selected Stoddert Wolves to the Writing Fair sponsored by Cluster II, a group of schools, 11 of whom were represented at the fair.   Special thanks go to Dr. Pesek and Ms. Barr for taking our students to the competition and having them share their stories.  The students were wonderful representatives for our school.

Thanks in advance to the parents who will participate in the parent focus group with our outside evaluators for the review to determine if Stoddert will be granted the status of Autonomy as described to you previously. For those who might have missed other Blasts, Autonomous status would allow us the space to innovate.  We would remain a part of a Cluster within DCPS, but be given some latitude to opt-in or opt-out of central office supports and design programmatic supports tailored to our school.  If we were to receive this status, we would be expected to continue our success and high achievement.  The all-day review takes place this next Tuesday, May 18th.

If you have not heard the word, an informational meeting is coming up.  Under the auspices of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM), the DC School Improvement Team for Stoddert will meet on Wednesday, May 26th at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Master Facility Plan (MFP) meeting.  Everyone in the community is invited to both of these meetings to hear about progress on Stoddert, and information regarding the citywide plan.

May I say again, I would ask you get your registrations for next school year to us as soon as you can, please.  We need to know if you will be with us.  If you cannot, for whatever reason, please let us know when you choose other options, as many are waiting for seats at Stoddert ES.  Those who wish to join us next year in our incredible new school call us frequently to find out if we have openings.  If you have any questions, please call the office (202.671.6030).  As I have said before, we want to round up all of our Stoddert Wolves early to make plans for a fabulous new year in our new school.
