Stoddert Elementary

PTA meeting May 20, 2010

The last general PTA meeting of this school year was held Thursday May 20 at the school.

Our co-presidents, Mary and Mimi, welcomed the  incoming principal at Hardy Middle School, Dana Nerenberg to speak with us and answer questions.  She spoke about the logistics of managing two schools and about community building with the feeder schools and other neighbors.   She has been spending time learning about Hardy as well as getting Hyde-Addison ready for her transition.

Mike Gardner gave a report on the Brick campaign.  We brought in over $50,000 in sales to families, alumni, neighbors and local businesses.  Over 430 bricks were sold!  More will be available to purchase during the next school year as well as years to come.  Our net gain was approximately $22,000 and will be used to support our students in their new building.

Dr. Cuthbert spoke about the Autonomy Panel that took place last week.  The team of analysts observed and interviewed parents, teachers and students and will provide suggestions/results to Chancellor Rhee.  We should know the results of our application in early June.  Keep your fingers crossed!       Labels will arrive June 1 for the beginning of the next transition..sorting and packing for moving out of the temporary building.  A school community packing weekend is scheduled for June 19-20 when some staff will need help getting things ready for storage.  Dismantling of the building will begin June 25.

Ms. Gross thanked the PTA on behalf of the teachers and staff for the wonderful lunches provided during Teacher Appreciation week and for the Stoddert Apparel given to them this spring.  The kids loved having a science day recently and she announced winners of the Science fair.   The classes are studying different countries and getting ready for International Day/Night which will be June 3.

Erik Warga handed out the budget report for this year and income/expenses for March-April.

Ginger Jacobs and Julie Schneider spoke briefly about the Stoddert Garden that will be installed (hopefully) in the fall.  Whole Foods and DC Greens are supporting our PTA’s garden project which will be designed to provide our teachers and students the space, tools and  resources for fun learning experiences outdoors.    More information will be announced as the project develops!

Karen Floman is our Fillmore representative and she thanked families for coming to the Art Show last week and announced a fundraiser for Fillmore to be held on May 26 at TownHall.  The restaurant will donate a portion of their sales to the Art Center so come out and enjoy a delicious dinner and support Fillmore as well!   Town Hall is also a big supporter of our Brick Campaign so thank them when you go for purchasing a LARGE brick!

Molly Evans is organizing a dedication for the former Stoddert Co-op teacher Miss Beth to be held in September.  She will have a plaque installed on  the building  and would like to donate some equipment to the classroom as well.  Raising money is always challenging- please contact her if you are interested in donating time or money to this endeavor.

The next Stoddert restaurant night will be at Surfside on June 7 starting at 5:30p.  Also a HUGE supporter of our Brick Campaign- please come out and support Surfside and Stoddert while enjoying a great dinner with your family and Stoddert friends.

In lieu of a traditional Field Day (due to our lack of outdoor space this year) the PTA will provide an Ice Cream Social for all students on June 18.

The PTA executive board elections were held at the end of the meeting and the new slate of officers is as follows:

Co-Presidents                    Mary McLaughlin and Ben Jensen

VP Communication        Erik Warga

Treasurer                            Eve-Lyn Turmail

Secretary                             Ginger Jacobs

Six School Rep                   Jennifer Sweeney

LSRT (4)                               Ebony Akinsanya          Beth Mailley      Mitch Wander       Kevin Youel-Page

There are lots of opportunities for every parent to be involved in school activities.   Please think about what  you’d  like to do and get involved!  Help is needed with communications (newsletter + website),  activities (fun fair, pot luck picnic, etc ) and much more. The more parents involved the more we can do for our kids.

Please don’t forget to register your kids for next year.   The school year is winding down and preparations are being made for next year’s classes.  The more information the staff has now, the better and more efficiently they can plan for class sizes, staff  and support for 2010-2011.

The first executive board meeting with next year’s officers will be  a Thursday in June -date and time TBA.
