Winners of the Black History Month Writing Contest
Students were asked to write three paragraphs about a present day African American role model. This person could be a teacher, an athlete, an elected official, a relative, a mentor, or anyone in any profession. Students were asked to look at Ernie Barnes’ painting, Beach Runner, where a runner untiringly runs up the beach and seems to have a goal in mind in the same way African Americans have tirelessly strived for equality and freedom.
Here are the WINNERS!

Eloise Greenfield
Eloise Greenfield inspired me to write poetry. One of her poems that I like and that inspired me is By Myself. By Myself inspired me by telling me that I can do or be whatever I want.
After reading some of Greenfield’s poems, I thought I could write poetry like her. Her poems told me that I could write about many things, for example, I could write about my family, my life, and things I like.
I like Eloise Greenfield’s poems because they give me pictures in my mind. Some of her poems don’t tell you exactly what she means, but you can tell what she means because she uses many details. That is how Eloise Greenfield inspires me.
Judy Ahn 2nd Place Winner

Martin Luther King Jr.
Without Martin, I would have probably not met half of my friends! You see, Martin never gave up. He just kept marching for freedom.
I think Martin Luther King Jr. changed a lot in my life. He changed the way I make new friends. Without him I would have never met Ana, Akansha, and Jiana and many others!
I am happy and grateful for what Martin Luther King Jr. did for the world and for me.

Muhammad Ali The King of Boxing
Muhammad Ali was the greatest boxer. When Muhammad Ali became a boxer, he challenged the greatest boxer ever. The public said, “Get out. You will get knocked out.” Ali didn’t give up. Ali was determined to win. Ali thought nothing was impossible.
Ali fought Liston and it was a hard battle. Ali fought all the way to the end and won. Ali stood up and said “Blacks are just as good as whites.”
Ali inspired me by telling everyone to follow his dream. Ali told me to follow my dream. That is how Ali inspired me.
