Healthy Schools Act of 2009, bill & upcoming hearing

Dear Ward 3 School and Parent Leaders,

In December, Councilmember Cheh introduced the Healthy Schools Act of 2009 to significantly improve the health, wellness, and nutrition in our schools. Since then, we have been working closely with DCPS, OSSE, DOH, the charters, and community experts to improve and refine this legislation. Specifically, this bill would (1) make school meals healthier and more nutritious; (2) increase the amount of local and fresh fruits and vegetables served in schools; (3) increase physical activity; (4) promote green initiatives; and (5) improve school nurse, asthma, and allergy programs.

Attached is a revised copy of the bill [pdf] along with a one-page summary [pdf]. One Wednesday [February 10], we are holding a public hearing on the bill and the public hearing notice is attached [pdf].

We would most welcome input from parents and other members of our school communities about how to make our schools healthier. Therefore, please feel free to share this information with your schools.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Drew
