PTA Meeting Notes – October 2007

Wednesday

This evening I attended the GPCA meeting so wanted to pass along relevant discussion items.

  • Crime update – I didn’t think to mention in my off-the-cuff remarks at the PTA meeting that there have been a rash of attacks recently in Glover Park. Apparently, women walking alone in the evening have been assaulted and there’s a pattern to the crimes. GPCA members were upset that there had not been more warnings throughout the neighborhood, so police attended the September meeting to address the issue and assure us they’re aware of the problem. They also indicated there had been numerous items stolen from houses, often through unsecured doors and windows, so they urged everyone to be alert to this as well.
  • Stoddert modernization/Rec Center – Dee Smith of Mary Cheh’s office attended and explained that the Rec Center construction documents are together and that project is ready to start. However, there is now a delay in the Stoddert project so Representative Cheh wants to pull together a committee to help determine how to best proceed. Ms. Smith suggested the modernization work should put forth sketches and suggestions so the Rec Center can be evaluated with that scope in mind. The group made it clear they expect the mayor to move the DCPS system forward so the two projects can proceed.
  • Neighborhood Watch – There was interest expressed in exploring a method of communicating to help proactively prevent crime. No concrete plan was suggested.
  • Liquor License Moratorium – There was much discussion about this issue, and it seemed virtually everyone was in support of it. Some were interested in modifying it to attract more restaurants, but there was concensus that it allowed for a balanced variety of business types in the neighborhood.
